Have you noticed that for some years now, things are getting dangerously out-of-hand on the climate front? You know how there are extreme weather conditions prevailing world over. We have floods and dry spells occurring at the same time. There are more cases of higher frequency earthquakes being reported, freakish tornadoes, tsunamis and what not. Today we are delving into the plight of people who are forced to deal with fearsome floods, and what measures they can take in case they are beached:
- Okay, first off mostly flood doesn’t occur overnight, it shows some symptoms like unstopping rains, or other, in which case we get a flood watch (a flood May happen) giving you time to prepare. Then we get a flood warning (meaning flooding will happen or has happened in some parts). Watch the news and other sources for official announcements and updates about the current situation. Also, do not believe or partake in any rumors. No one needs panic in such situations
- When a flood warning is released move to high and dry areas (if possible)
- Be sure to have emergency supplies with you, clean water, enough food, batteries, power back-ups and required medications. Also keep evacuation details like emergency helpline number and safe areas nearby
- Make sure to disconnect all electrical appliances from the main switch. Also, plug off or close off gas valve as well
- Now it’s best to stay in the safety of indoors but if you step out, avoid driving in waterlogged areas. Most unfortunate death cases happen in drowned vehicles
- Next, try not to cross floods by walking or swimming. If you have to take that risk than use a walking stick to gauge the firmness of ground. You don’t want to fall. Also, there can be fallen power lines or poles which you definitely want to avoid
- The risk of infections rides high-tide as well during floods. As the outside water can be mixed with sewerage and gasoline so you would want to disinfect everything that got wet. Also, boil drinking water to avoid unnecessary health hazards
- In case you experience any bout of dizziness, vomiting or any other illness consult a doctor urgently
- Finally returning home after it has been declared safe to do so by city/state officials
The list may seem long to do, but in practice, you will realize they overlap and will go a long way to help you out. A little presence of mind often helps you stay afloat in face of such calamities.
