My sister off late had been complaining about being tired and massive pain in knees. Of course, I teased her and said it happens with age (like you never said that to your older sibling). But on a more serious note, we suggested a consultation with the doctor. After the battery of test were done the prognosis suggested a vitamin D deficiency. Which ideally should come as a surprise considering we live in Delhi where the sun is scorching bright, we can’t avoid sunlight even if we tried to. But it didn’t, Vit-D deficiency is pretty common now not just in Delhi but across India. The real problem is not sunlight but calcium deficiency in people, which again is somewhat hard to believe, after all, we are a milk country, and not all of us are lactose intolerant. So what really is happening here?
The answer that was revealed recently is a shocker, you may want to grab your seat for this one. Based on several researches and reports from across the globe, WHO suggested the culprit behind this is majorly our clean safe RO water. Believe me, I too was flabbergasted and thought it a ruse, a ploy, but they made a compelling case. The story in a nutshell goes, water, as we all know, is the best adapter, wherever it passes from it picks up the traits, be it the impurities, dust, bacteria, and also minerals. Did you know that water also nourishes our bodies with calcium and magnesium and not just food is responsible for that? The very essential minerals which many of us now lack.
The process of ‘Reverse Osmosis’ definitely achieves clean water which has been rid of impurities and germ but not healthy and hence not really safe either. In this process, it removes the minerals as well and when we consume this demineralized water, it makes up for the lack of minerals by collecting them from within our bodies. Yes, you heard it correct, as it passes through your body, this water collects calcium (vitamin D) and magnesium, and throws it out if our system in a garbage disposal. A purification of sorts within our bodies but one that damages us in the long run. Not just that, when you cook the food in RO water, it reduces the mineral content from the food as well, so eventually, this lack or deficiency can’t even be made up from our diets. To forewarn you, in the long run, the dangers we get exposed to thanks to this deficiency are:
- Osteoporosis
- Arthritis
- Depression
- Bone loss
- Irritability
- Diabetes
- Fatigue
- Cramps
- Insomnia
- Hypertension
- Cardiovascular issues
It is definitely alarming, right? What is the solution – we cannot obviously end up drinking tap water in cities where freshwater sources are limited, and contaminated water is in abundance. We have to re-mineralize our water or start taking supplements.
Who knew clean water can be so dangerous. But I believe that if we humans learn to appreciate nature and start caring for it, nature will take care of us again.
